Weekend Movie Review

Although there are a ton of new movies that I’d like to watch, by the time the weekend has rolled around, I just want to watch something I know I’ll like. Maybe I’ve got to start sprinkling some in during the week when they seem the most appealing.

Killer Heat – Perhaps this was the wrong movie to start with as far as watching new things goes. With a cast consisting of Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Shailene Woodley and Richard Madden I thought this was a shoe-in. Then I found out it was based on a short story from Jo Nesbo. Winning combo, right? Wrong. I should have known that when I saw it on Prime’s homepage and had never heard of it prior, nor were there any reviews, that I was in for some disappointment. Afterwards when I looked and saw that it had a 17 percent on Rotten Tomatoes, I couldn’t help but wholeheartedly agree. Do I think they stuck the ending? Sure. But the 75 minutes that came before that final 15 was a real slog. Honestly, just check out the short story instead.

Marry My Dead Body – After that disastrous Friday night choice, I knew I needed to make up for it with a film that was legitimately good. That’s where the Taiwanese crime-comedy Marry My Dead Body comes in! And apparently at the perfect time! I had only recently learned that a series was going to be made featuring more the GG Precinct shown in the film, and it turns out that it’s already available on Netflix in the US! After getting the chance to see Gingle Wang in person just last month, I cannot wait to start this series and see more of her on my screen. This movie was still just as fabulous as the first time I saw it. Tons of great action, but also obscenely funny and even still heartwarming/wrenching at times. Please watch this!

The Childe – For whatever reason I also wanted another comfort movie to end the weekend with, so I sat down to enjoy South Korea’s The Childe for the seventh time this year. Seriously, I cannot remember a time where I’ve watched a movie this much in such a short amount of time other than Hot Rod. It’s just the perfect blend of action, gore, and comedy. And the twist at the end is just delicious. I sincerely hope that there might be more to this story in the future, but if not, I know I will be content watching this over and over again.
