Given that I was in NYC all weekend, I surprised myself by still squeezing in a few movies!
Locked – I don’t know if I’m slacking big time or if studios are just completely dropping the ball on advertising for movies featuring the likes of Bill Skarsgaard and Anthony Hopkins? Yes, the latter is only barely physically in the movie, but his voice coming through the speakers of a pimped out car is good enough for me. He’s talking in the car to Eddie, a young father who is kind of trying to turn his life around but is definitely still falling short of being there for his ex, and especially for his daughter. Looking to make a quick buck to get his van back, he breaks into a really fancy looking SUV, but then cannot get out. This was all part of the voice of William’s plan. He’s a man dying of cancer and looking to bring some justice to the world that has let him down more than once. You’ll see Eddie go through it all, and whether or not William is right or Eddie is right, it does leave the audience with a lot to ponder. A great chamber piece!
Eternal Summer – This Taiwanese drama has been on my radar for quite some time, but kudos to Netflix for thinking I would like something like this as I was scrolling late Sunday night. No excuse not to watch it now! Johnathan tells us that Shane came into his life because someone told him to. We are then treated to a flashback of a disruptive and friendless Shane who is befriended by Johnathan at the demand of one of his teachers. Soon enough the two are bonded at the hip. Their world changes drastically with the introduction of Carrie. When her crush on Johnathan isn’t reciprocated, she rightly guesses that he has feelings for Shane. Though he doesn’t ever intend to do anything about it, the trio’s complicated relationship comes to a head in college after Shane gets into a minor car accident. It was tough to see the strain on Johnathan’s life, and it’s almost as if Shane and Carrie are tormenting him, though I do truly believe they had no ill intentions. Taiwan continues to feed me good films!
The Gentlemen – What’s not to love about this film at this point? As I’ve stated in the past, Guy Ritchie’s style is my style, and the never-ending quips and quick wit in this film are top tier. Add a little bit of over the top action sequences and dramatic delivery, and you’ve got yourself an A+ movie. I’m so glad that my work’s movie club voted on this one as the pick for the month. I’m also hoping I can convince most of them to watch the show, as well. But who knows, this kind of film might not be for everyone, but at least it gives me the chance to talk about my Charlie Hunamn encounter again.
