Weekend Movie Review

This weekend was sadly overrun by work, but I still managed to fit some movies in where I could. Here’s what took top priority.

Pillion – I honestly had no clue what this title meant, but it turns out a pillion is the raised back seat on the back of a motorcycle. In retrospect, that’s a pretty great name for this film. Colin, an awkward and shy man, is having no luck scoring a guy, regardless of how hard his dying mother tries to set him up. In a strange twist though, he catches the attention of Ray (the most handsome Skarsgard), the leader of a gay motorcycle gang. Colin willing becomes the sub to Ray’s dom, and the things they do seem so awkward that I think I would evaporate on the spot in some of the situations. But, this is a real way of life for people, and though it may not seem like a real relationship to a lot of people, it’s clear there is a lot of love between Colin and Ray, despite Ray not really wanting to be in love. I suppose a lot of this movie would be graphic to people, so I don’t know what it says about me that I’ve seen worse. All in all, this was a unique love story that had a great share of laughs along it’s unusual journey.

The Old Guard 2 – Given that it’s been five years since the release of the original film, I truthfully couldn’t remember much of what the plot was about. Ultimately, it didn’t quite matter, as I got several reminders along the way. Andy was one of the oldest immortal beings, but recently lost her powers when Nile was “born.” In the beginning of the film, the whole team is working to take down an arms dealer, though they still aren’t able to locate the supplier. After adding another immortal to the mix, they learn that the oldest immortal is behind it, and eventually they learn that Andy’s ride or die, Quyhn, has finally been located after 5 centuries only to be a part of Andy’s takedown. It’s crazy that after all this time the immortals are still learning things about each other. I actually think checking out the comics that this film series is based on would be worthwhile to get more details, because a lot of this film just felt odd. And with such mixed reviews, it’s hard telling if we’ll get another film to take us forward off of the HUGE cliffhanger we were left at.

Scream 7 – I have no clue what the future of the Scream franchise holds. In fact, I’m surprised it even survived enough to make it to this seventh installment after all of the controversy surrounding the previous two film’s cast. But, we’re back with Sydney and her family this time. Though Sydney rightfully will always feel paranoid, I think she believes that she’s managed to find a little bit of peace in her small Texas town where even though people know who she is, they pretty much leave her well enough alone. And after the events in New York, she also thinks she has room to breathe. Wrong. Her eldest daughter, Tatum, and her friend group are the targets for the latest psycho donning the Ghostface mask, and with how high tech our world is becoming, it’s making it harder and harder to nail down the culprit. While some of the kills are gruesome, they also kind of made me giggle. Don’t read too much into that. All in all, I enjoyed watching this one even though I found the killer reveal to be the lamest of the franchise. We shall see what comes next!
