Weekend Movie Review

Some old and some new titles this weekend, but absolutely no regrets! Let’s get into it!

The Suicide Squad – I know it’s confusing to have a movie with almost exactly the same name as its predecessor, and it’s not in any way a direct sequel to the 2016 film, but I promise you that this blockbuster is a fun time. I think that DC should stick to this hard “R” stance like Deadpool did, because it made this movie better for it. Sure, the fact that it didn’t need to tie into anything probably helped, too, but still. What was perhaps a little more confusing to me was why they just didn’t fully start over with the cast? Probably contract related, but that made its continuity decision that much more head-scratching. Regardless, you get to see Harley Quinn, Rick Flag, and a bunch of other favorite characters from the first film reunite with a bunch of new ones as they shed blood in their new quest. I loved how much more unlikeable Viola Davis’ character was in this one, and there was a good mix of humor among the gore. I suppose that’s what James Gunn is good at. No one was a real scene-stealer for me, but that’s probably for the best. Confusion be damned, go check this movie out!

The Green Knight – I know I just wrote about this medieval epic last week, but it was so darn good I convinced a friend to go see it with me this time. While I was surprised that I really didn’t miss much the first time, this is still a film that held my attention the whole way through. My friend was equally rapt by it’s gorgeousness. In fact, I don’t think we said a single word to each other the whole time – that’s how captivating it is! If you want a creepy, sprawling, and fantastical medieval story, then go watch this gem of an indie!

Till Death – Other than hearing Megan Fox’s name in passing the last several years, I hadn’t really seen her in much. It appears though, she’s starting to take back charge of her career (and personal life)! Just this year she’s been in a handful of independent films, but it’s this one, Till Death, that’s sort of reclaiming her as a horror icon since her time in cult-favorite Jennifer’s Body. I for one, was pretty impressed with the originality of this film. While I hope it never happens to someone…I suppose it could. And what happens is this. Emma’s just ended an affair on her wedding anniversary to her controlling husband. He seems like he wants to rekindle what they once had, but that’s before she wakes up handcuffed to his dead body. Fear not, this isn’t a whodunnit, but it’s more of a how the hell is she supposed to get out of this frozen and isolated place?! And as if that isn’t hard enough, she also has to contend with a man who’d robbed and stabbed her in the past. Very thrilling!

Miss March – Not all that long ago I wanted to watch this classically stupid comedy another watch, because honestly, it’s great. But I had more reason to watch it this weekend because unfortunately, star Trevor Moore of The Whitest Kids U Know passed in an accident on Friday. I was so, so sad to hear that. The comedy group had somewhat recently gotten back together and started doing stuff together again, and they have an animated film on the horizon. Not to mention his young family left behind. Truly tragic. With that, it’s nice to be able to go back and enjoy the comedy he did make, and that puts this movie near the top of the list. In this, Moore plays best friend, Tucker, who’s best friends with Eugene…who has been in a coma for a really long time. All he wants to do when he wakes up is reunite with his old girlfriend. Thus embarks a trip to the Playboy Mansion, because that’s what she’s been doing for work to pay for Eugene’s medical bills. I mean obviously hilarity ensues. It can’t not! So, if you’re out there mourning the loss of a comedy great, give this movie a watch, along with all the sketch comedy you can find!
