I got a little lazy for the last full weekend of August, but there were some decent picks.
Wildhood – By far the best of the bunch from this weekend. Link decides to take his little brother and skip out on his abusive father in an attempt to learn more about his native background and hopefully find his mother in the process. Very quickly into the trip they meet up with the wandering Pasmay, who’s recently been disowned from his family for his queerness. The three go on a fairly peaceful and very nature-filled journey, where Pasmay teaches Link more about his Mi’kmaq heritage while the two grow intimately closer. It was just a really beautiful drama that I hope more people take a chance on.
Me Time – What a piece of garbage. Kevin Hart plays a tight-wad, stay at home dad who gets the green card from his wife to have a good time at his single friend’s (Mark Wahlberg) birthday party. A bunch of ridiculous stuff ensues, and while these guys are funny on their own, this film did not work in any way. It’s honestly not worth saying much more than don’t watch it.
The Object of My Affection – What an interesting premise and a very forward film for 1998! George has just been dumped by his long-term boyfriend and gets invited to move in with new friend, Nina. The two form a very close friendship, but soon Nina is pregnant with her boyfriend’s child. The two break up and George vows to help raise the baby with Nina. Unfortunately, Nina develops deeper feelings for George, thinking that it could work out between them since he apparently dated a girl in high school (um, beard much?). Those parts of the film were a little awkward, but it did remind me of Will & Grace with just a little less humor. I was shocked at the amount of swearing in this film the most honestly. Overall though, this was an interesting watch.
