Weekend Movie Review

It was kind of a hodge-podge this weekend, and not nearly as many movies were viewed as I would have liked. Still, here’s what made the cut.

My Best Friend’s Exorcism – This was one of the last novels by Grady Hendrix that I read, and then I was shocked to learn that it was being adapted into a film! And so soon! Just in time for spooky season, I’d say. Like the book, Abby and Gretchen are best friends, but that friendship is tested when Gretchen gets possessed by a demon. The film stayed pretty faithful to the book, checking off all the major plot points. It didn’t quite feel as awesome as the book was, but the casting was good enough for me to forgive them. They even managed to capture the most disturbing scene in the book pretty accurately. I definitely conjured it more gruesomely than what made the film, but still, I’ll never get it out of my head. Go watch for some seasonal fun! And also, read the damn book!

Bros – From the get go I will say that I enjoyed watching this movie, but it’s not something I will ever watch again. Yes, it had me laughing really hard almost the whole time, but the leads of this film are what kind of ruined it for me a little. Both were ultimately well-rounded in that they both had flaws to overcome, but neither were very likeable in my eyes. Also, I think I just need to accept the fact that I don’t really enjoy most rom-coms. That already hindered this a bit, but if you want some solid laughs, certainly check it out. Also, if Billy Eichner is your guy, he’s all over it.

Interview with the Vampire – Even though this film came out when I was three, I just knew it was going to hold up, and I was right! It had been on my watch-list for quite some time, but it took the promise of AMC’s new series based on Anne Rice’s novel of the same name to finally force my hand. I’m so glad I did though! Firstly, this movie was SEXY. If you’ve got Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise, and Antonio Banderas all playing vampires, you just know it’s going to be and they did not disappoint. Also, little Kirsten Dunst killed it! It’s my understanding that this film played pretty closely to the novel, but that’s not too surprising given that Rice penned the screenplay. I highly recommend this film if you like vampires at all, or are looking for some more seasonal good times. Also, an early spoiler – the first episode of the new series is even more sexy, so it’s looking promising.
