Weekend Movie Review

My friends, this weekend was packed, but I still managed to squeeze a couple movies in.

Scream VI – Like many, I suspect, I had my doubts about how the sixth installment of this franchise would fair without the ultimate final girl, Sydney Prescott. I was foolish to do so. Sure, Gale Weathers was still in the mix, but barely so. Instead, the focus was on the “core four” as Chad Meeks-Martin dubbed them early in the film. While they all thought they were safe in New York, a new Ghostface had other plans for them. The focus was strong on the Carpenter sisters, with Tara not knowing how deal with everything that happened to them in Woodsboro, and Sam trying and failing to get back to a sense of normalcy while simultaneously blending in. This time around the kills were more brutal and frequent and the scares were fun. I know I had my guesses of who the killer was, but the outcome was quite clever like all past installments.

Lonesome – This film looked intriguing, but about thirty minutes in I knew I was kind of over it. Though at just about the 90-minute mark, I decided to see it through to the end. Firstly, I guess I should have done more research because I was really surprised when everyone started talking in an Australian accent. I suppose there are farmers everywhere, but I just assumed that Casey’s cowboy attire meant that he was from the American mid-west. We find him newly in Sydney looking for any hook-up that comes his way, essentially like a starting over, given that his father kicked him out when he discovered he was gay. He meets casual hook-up, Tib, and the pair soon grow a deeper bond. They are boys though, so they’re dumb and don’t properly know how to process emotions. According to Rotten Tomatoes this movie is amazing, but I missed the point apparently.
