October viewings, in any format, have been slacking so far this month. Here’s hoping I can make it up to myself soon!
Totally Killer – Since I was a big fan of The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, I knew I was in for this horror comedy the second I saw Kiernan Shipka in the thumbnail for the trailer. It for sure gives off Happy Death Day and Freaky vibes, though not filmed by Christopher Landon. It was produced by Blumhouse though, so I’m still not surprised by the tone it delivered. And I think it totally nailed the tone even if some of the plot wasn’t as strong. Shipka plays Jamie, who’s mother was the sole survivor of a group of friends that got murdered in the late 80s by some creep in an even creepier mask. Jamie is quite blasé about the whole thing until her mother gets killed by someone in that same mask in present day. Her friend just so happens to be working on a time machine, so of course in the process of trying to escape the killer herself, Jamie accidently gets herself sent back to the day of the first murder. She tries her hardest to prevent the killings, and I did like seeing how her choices then impacted the present. A fun time for sure!
Fair Play – Finally, another Sundance release! This erotic thriller I actually had the pleasure of watching virtually during the festival and it definitely came away as one of my favorites. Emily and Luke both work at the same cutthroat hedge fund, where an unexpected promotion leads to some serious inferiority complex issues. Emily is at the top of her game and one thousand percent doesn’t deserve the tearing down that her fiancé Luke continuously doles out. There are some big punches here and a lot of boundary pushing, but it is an intensely satisfying watch.
