A little late in the week, I know, but that doesn’t mean I still can’t catch you up to speed on what went down this week on Animal Kingdom and Roswell, New Mexico. Enough chit-chat and let’s get on with it!
This week on Animal Kingdom, you can tell Deran has had enough with J’s secrecy, so he forces him to show him the bowling alley, give him the safe code, and tells him to sell the apartment he bought with Smurf’s money. J might have been ruthless enough to put a bullet in Smurf, but I don’t know if he’s brave enough yet to face one of his uncles. At least, not when he doesn’t have a plan yet. Aside from bossing J around, he also goes and tries to take charge of the job they just pulled. He wants to get rid of this cocaine and fast. There is definitely mixed messaging coming from the Codys and that’s going to make them look weak and become a target pretty quick if I had to guess. Even worse, they are also trusting Frankie to be their fence for some of Smurf’s stuff. It might be the only option they have though if they’re looking to get paid before Pamela Johnson shows up.
All of that chaos is anchored by my favorite and least favorite parts of the episode. In the most boring category are the flashbacks to young Smurf. All we really get from it is her partying, but more importantly, we see even more how Pope was impacted mentally in his youth. In present day, we meet him in handcuffs and a gash on his forehead, but Pope has no idea what’s happened. He gets admitted and is told he can’t leave until he gets evaluated. At this point we learn that Smurf was managing his mental illness, but with her gone, he doesn’t know how to get the medication. J springs him even though I don’t think he wanted to (or had to) go. It’s only a few minutes before Pope explodes on J for killing his mother and not giving them all a chance to grieve. He’s also with it enough to seriously question who put J in charge. Looks like the sharks are circling in. It also looks like we’ll meet present-day Pamela Johnson finally next week!
This week on Roswell, New Mexico, Michael and Isobel spend a lot of time grilling Jones about his life. He claims he’s good and was actually trying to save Max from Michael’s mother! Clearly, Michael isn’t buying it, but I’m with Isobel that they can’t totally dismiss his version of events. I’m sure it’s just a matter of time before Jones gets cut loose, and then we’ll really get the chance to learn his true intentions. Elsewhere, Maria is trying to induce her visions because she thinks someone is going to get murdered. I sort of already thought that was a given? Oh, well. Now it’s confirmed. She tries and fails before Kyle steps in, although I don’t feel like we learn much more. Maria was part of one of the most awfully written scenes of dialogue I may have ever heard though, and that was funny.
Picking up with Rosa’s scare last week, apparently what she injected Wyatt with was the memory-erasing drug used on Jenna last season. She dosed him about 100 times more than she got dosed though, so the past ten years of his memory have essentially been erased. That apparently also erased his racism? We’ll see how it goes, but it appears this new Wyatt has got a bit of a crush on Rosa. Alex officially becomes a part of Dark Sky after working his way through some twisted escape-room like test. They’re a little slow to reveal stuff with that storyline, but I’m sure it will become more crucial as time passes. Finally, Liz is convinced to go back to Roswell to get new samples for her research. The episode ends with Max exclaiming, “Liz?!” I’m sure there will be loads of drama next week!
So far, Animal Kingdom seems to be dragging a little bit for already being four episodes into the season. I hope it’s worth it all in the end, but we shall see! On the opposite end of that spectrum, I feel like Roswell, New Mexico is flooding us with information. There are a lot of different storylines happening right now, but I’m almost positive they’ll all merge at some point. Until next week!
