It’s still really the beginning of the week, so that means it’s time to recap the three dramas I’ve got on rotation for the spring 2021 television season!
9-1-1 Lone Star kicked us off with an episode that made me laugh out loud on a number of occasions, despite some of the serious subject matter that was addressed. Some of the highlighted funnies were Mateo’s house exploding (no one inside thankfully), the team discussing Owen on a open line, and some totally drunk dancing to Steely Dan. Now, the team had great reason to be talking about Owen because he is definitely depressed. First, his ex-wife leaves him again, T.K. moves in with Carlos at the start of the episode, and he’s got his final cancer surgery coming up. It takes an intervention and a sick dog, but Owen finally comes to terms with the struggles he’s facing and vows to seek help. Elsewhere in the episode, Grace is trying to be her usual self while healing from the car crash, which means she’s accepting help from no one. That works alright for her until she’s gets painfully stuck in the backseat of her car reaching for her keys. Luckily, Tommy is a great friend and Judd is perhaps the best husband a woman could ask for. At this point, we’re nine episodes into the season, so I don’t know how many are left, but I look forward to see what other things this supportive group gets to do next!
In this week’s episode of Prodigal Son, Capshaw is seriously regretting her decision to hook up with Martin, and as we later learn, she was right to do that! Anyway, our case of the week this time involves an agoraphobic ex-chess grand master who is the only witness to the murder of his neighbor. Not much time was spent on the actual killer this week (Mr. Robot‘s Elliot Villar!), and instead we spent more time with Malcolm trying to convince the chess player to go back outside to live his life! At the end of the episode, he also tries to get Malcolm to reveal his feelings to Dani, but I sort of hope she’ll still be skeptical around him. Could you imagine though if they do end up together how badly it will crash and burn when she realizes what his whole family has done? So much potential! Alright, back to it. Martin and his weird little prison gang decide today is the day they break out, and Martin masterfully dupes Capshaw into giving him her keycard. He claims he has real feelings for her but that the love for his family is stronger. Do I buy that he ever really had feelings for her? Nah. Just before Martin escapes, he leaves Malcolm a cryptic message saying that since he’s his son, that Malcolm will know where to find him. This show has so much potential that they are either intentionally dragging out, or are just really not that creative. I can only hope they deliver as the season goes on! For instance, why in the heck is the sociopathic Ainsley not a bigger part of this season?! It makes absolutely no sense to me. Make it make sense!
Finally, Big Sky picks up right where we left off which is basically a dead Blake in the very old grave he dug up last week. When John Wayne freaks out and leaves, Cheyenne takes this opportunity to get some leverage on her brothers. She’s tough, I’ll give her that, but I think she is a decent person underneath and I imagine that will soon be her undoing. For now though, the brothers aren’t crossing her. Jenny soon learns of Blake’s death and assumes it wasn’t suicide like the local sheriffs are claiming. The woman who works the front desk goes to Jenny’s motel to confirm this right before the episode ends with a truck barreling through the room! We’ll see how that turns out next week. Meanwhile, Ronald hears Scarlett’s sister Mary’s doubts about him, so naturally she is killed. Somehow though, he manages to divert suspicions off of himself by planting a body? Wasn’t totally clear on that part, but for now, he’s gotten rid of his most recent problem. While a lot of stuff happened this episode, it didn’t really feel like it. I’m ready for more stuff to be happening with Ronald! He’s easily the most intriguing part of the show. I guess it just remains to be seen how the remainder of this season will go.
