The second season of Adults picks up where the first season left off, and I was happy it made it to my TV sooner than I was expecting!
Now that Anton has married Pual Baker so he can retain his US citizenship, the roommates remain unmoved. It’s always interesting to think that these five younger twenty-somethings all live together. I get that New York is a different beast, but I could not imagine living with four of my friends and working a real job. Especially since none of them are persuing anything in the entertainment industry. But perhaps that’s a refreshing beat, too. Not everyone that lives in New York is there to try and “make it.”
In any case, there is no real over-arching theme to the season, we just get to explore different issues that these friends work through. Billie really goes through it the first couple of episodes. She’s trying to secure a job finally, but her social media past is out there to haunt any potential prospects. She also is in a bit of a crisis, realizing she’s not a teenager trying to sneak into clubs anymore. And even though she is still very young and cool by many people’s standards, the kids of today will never see her, or you or me for that matter, as young or cool.
Issa is inspired by Anton’s sister to freeze her eggs, which leads to some hilarious attempts to administer injections with Samir’s help. This journey proves to be another point of tension between her relationship with Paul Baker, though the two still continue to date enthusiastically. That is until the night they all take acid together and attempt to get a menagerie of critters out of their house. They realize that they are too afraid to talk about things with each other, and even though they have immense love for each other, they realize that doesn’t make for a good long term relationship.
Samir is taking the job of boyfriend seriously with Carly, who spends most of the season trying to finish up her dentisry schooling. Towards the end though, she’s inspired by Anton to follow her dreams, so she blows her tuition money to try and break into K-Pop. As someone who is a more recent K-Pop fan, that episode had me cackling and cringing a lot. Samir has to navigate how to be both the good and bad guy in this scenario. Of all the things that really had me laughing this season was Anton slipping an accidental “C” word at a work meeting. His real self slid into his work self and it kind of ruins his job. I don’t want to ruin any more of that episode, but it was a home run for me.
It’s crazy how much this little show took off this season. I feel like I’m seeing it everywhere on socials, Youtube, and just general reviews, but maybe that’s just the algorithms really curating to what I like. Either way, I think there will be more future seasons to this show, so I’m excited to see how things progress after some finale hookups.
