Book Review: Conventionally Yours by Annabeth Albert

As you all know, I’ve fully embraced my nerd status, so why would I not want to read a cute romance novel related to a massive fan convention in Las Vegas?! And it was just that: cute. Annabeth Albert delivered all the frills and nerdiness in her road-trip romance novel, Conventionally Yours.

The book follows a group of Odyssey gamers who all start out to make the trip of a lifetime to Las Vegas to compete in a tournament to get them to touring level fame. Only thing is, everyone keeps dropping like flies before the trip really even starts, so that means an almost uncomfortably awkward and low-key hostile adventure with nemeses Conrad and Alden.

Both are excellent players, and are desperate to win the tournament for vastly different reasons. Conrad, although he exudes confidence, is at a dead end financially, so he bets it all on winning to essentially re-start his life. Alden, on the other hand, struggles socially and is at a crossroads with his future. He’s butting heads with his parents before leaving for the tournament, and he thinks the win can give him the answers he’s looking for.

While the trip starts off rather stiff and standoffish between the two, eventually Conrad and Alden learn enough about each other to form and very close friendship and eventually a romance. But will that be enough for them to put their dreams aside at the tournament? Honestly, this book was light and fun, and like I said earlier, just cute! Nothing like a fluffy summer read to round out August with.
