Dangerous Romance Series Review

Another week, another Thai BL drama! This was a relatively new show and apparently with a newer GMMTV couple as the leads. Dangerous Romance wasn’t my favorite out there, but I really enjoyed it overall.

Kanghan is a bully at school who has chosen Sailom and his friends as his latest targets. Too bad for Kanghan that Sailom is not only smart, but clever, and manages to slip out of most of Kanghan’s traps. He reaches his breaking point though when he is caught by his grandmother and has to apologize to Sailom in front of his grandmother and important school staff. He plans to scare Sailom at home with a fake gun in retaliation for his embarrassment, but ends up saving Sailom from some loan sharks. This serves as a big wake-up call to the rich Kanghan about how the other half lives day to day.

From this, he gives in to his grandmother’s suggestion that Sailom be his tutor. Secretly, Kanghan thinks this will also be a good way to get his dad to pay more attention to him and actually have goals and expectations for his son. They’ve been disconnected since his mother died, so bullying was also a form of acting out hoping to gain his father’s attention. Whatever bad blood existed between Kanghan and Sailom dissipates by the second episode. Seriously. That’s maybe the fastest conflict resolution I’ve ever seen in a series, but it had me really wondering how they were going to fill another ten episodes.

About half of that time was spent on school grounds, and also in the pair just hanging out for fun. It’s clear pretty early on that Kanghan has some feelings for Sailom, but once Sailom catches up, he’s fallen just as hard, if not as quickly. There is a very brief “love triangle” moment, but that’s really just the catalyst to get the two to admit how they feel about each other. It’s perhaps the only time in the series where Sailom hesitates, as he normally just says it like it is. These two are so cute together. I thought the chemistry was on point, and not just by them, but also all of the supporting pairs! Besides Only Friends, this series maybe had the most extra pairings I’ve had the pleasure of seeing. Will this result in some spin-off series? One can only hope!

The last five episodes is where this series kind of lost some steam for me. They almost completely removed the schooling element from it all and had Kanghan and Sailom on the run from some loan sharks that had also put Kanghan’s father in a coma. I think Kanghan had a pretty natural reaction when he learned who was responsible, but it took reason far too long to kick in there. All in all, everything turned out for the best for Kanghan and Sailom, but I really do think there is more story to tell for the supporting cast. If we’re lucky!
