I know it’s a few days late now, but the Emmys were on this past Monday, and it just proves to me again why awards season is my favorite season!
There were some fun, new wins for the night, but a lot of repeats in a year when there were some really, really great shows and performances. For instance, I was supremely bummed that Yellowjackets got totally shut out. I felt like Melanie Lynskey and Christina Ricci deserved their trophies. Not that Zendaya isn’t good in Euphoria, nor Julia Garner in Ozark, but they’ve already won before. Spread the love. I would have liked to have seen Stranger Things over Succession, but both are fabulous, so I really won in the end. A delightful surprise came in the form of Matthew Macfadyen beating out his Succession castmates for Supporting. Other wins that I was giddy to see included Michael Keaton for Dopesick, even though it doesn’t come as much of a surprise.
I also really enjoyed the love spread around in the comedy categories. Sure, Ted Lasso took home the trophies for series, lead actor, and supporting actor, but otherwise, we got to see Abbott Elementary get a writing and supporting actress win for Sheryl Lee Ralph! We also got Jean Smart (yay!), and honestly some dominance for White Lotus! That limited series win was kind of a surprise for me, but Murray Bartlett and the great Jennifer Coolidge were totally deserving! Perhaps my favorite moment during all the comedy wins was Brett Goldstein repeating back an odd prompt that Lizzo had to read when he said, “I am a big girl,” in his gruff a deep voice. Of course he swore, but he wouldn’t be Brett Goldstein if he didn’t!
Overall, I though the pace of the evening was nice, and sure there were some speeches that went on for an eternity and others that only lasted like fifteen seconds, but there weren’t too many in-between bits, which is usually my biggest gripe. With that being said, I was surprised there were no SNL sketches popping up, or at least bits featuring any of his castmates. Especially given that there were probably a dozen there if we’re including alumni. Oh well, instead we got a brief Kenan and Kel reunion and that just made my face hurt with how wide I was smiling. I also read afterwards that they may have hinted at a Goodburger sequel?? That’d be pretty cool. Of all the presenters, I’d say the Only Murders In the Building trio were top-notch. I doubted people wanting them to host the Oscars before, but now I see it. Bring it on!
All in all, it was a fun evening, and I really enjoy seeing celebrities interact with each other outside of their shows. It’s a nice distraction from all the crap in this world, and it’s just a glimpse of what’s to come early next year. For a complete list of all the winners, check them out here.
