Foals – Life is Yours Album Review

Yay, new Foals!! I know I’m being selfish because they released two full albums about six months apart from each other back in 2019, but I was ready for new music! They finally delivered, as a new three-piece, with Life Is Yours.

The album is so fun and danceable, I could listen to it all day. Seriously, if you listen to “2 am” and not want to dance somehow you’ve got a screw loose. Similarly, “Wake Me Up” and “2001” round out the danceable tracks perfectly. All three of these songs were also the perfect tracks to pick to promote the album. They are infectiously catchy and attention-grabbing, and they tout the best the band has had to offer in the past. “Wake Me Up” was immediately a hook for me, as it reminded me a lot of “My Number,” and “2001” felt like it was channeling Empire of the Sun a little bit. These are both really great things.

Aside from the three singles, I also really enjoyed the opening and title track, “Life is Yours.” It’s both synth-heavy and upbeat, and certain parts of the song really reminded me of The Strokes’ “Under the Cover of Darkness.” “Crest of the Wave” is another final-hour single that was released that I didn’t totally love like the others, but after listening to it again, I’m a fan. The song itself is just really smooth and something a little different compared to the rest of the album. I call out this song too because it gives me immense hope for the rest of the songs on the album. I thought the rest were all sort of middle of the road, but I think future listens will prove me wrong as it did with “Crest of the Wave.”

Foals is a band is totally worth any hype you’ve ever heard about them, and the promise of this new album is probably one I was most excited about this year. Even more exciting? A tour! That’s right, after eight long years, I finally get to see this band again, and you bet your ass I bought a ticket the second the presale went live. I hope you all gives these geniuses a chance.
