Friday Night Double Feature

That’s right, I’m at it again, even though I just did the same thing last week! I saw back to back movies last night, and the outcome was significantly better! A large part of that has to do with the fact that I got to see Knives Out a week before its official release date! I’ll be as brief and non-spoily as I can with this review, so buckle up!

Knives Out immediately caught my attention because of the mass amount of celebrities in this film. While I was really going for Michael Shannon, the real stars were Ana de Armas and Daniel Craig. They had such fun banter, although so did the rest of the cast, and they certainly had no trouble making fun of themselves. They also had no trouble pointing out the obvious when Lakeith Stanfield’s character says, “this house is like a giant Clue board.” In a movie like this, I love those sort of meta references.

I will say the plot had me baffled, because almost right away you find out who the killer is! And then, almost everyone else finds out, too! I was a little worried how the rest of the film was going to go, but there were never any dull moments, and the twist at the end was very fun. For sheer star-power alone you should go see this movie, but the entertainment value is the reason to stay. Just a really fun film!

Straight after that movie ended, I crossed the hall to go see 21 Bridges. I sort of never really paid any attention to the trailers for this movie, so I was surprised to see some faces besides Chadwick Boseman as the lead. He was supported nicely with J.K. Simmons, Sienna Miller (with a rather cringy New York accent), Stephan James, and Taylor Kitsch! That was a fun surprise!

The film follows Boseman as he tries to hunt down two criminals who killed eight cops at one site. Sort of similar to Knives Out, 21 Bridges seemed to have solved the case about halfway through the film. With this one though, the twist was a little more obvious only because a movie I saw about a month earlier had an almost identical plot. For my money, I say go see Black and Blue, and skip this one until it’s available to rent.
