Holy cow! How to Get Away with Murder just delivered an insane mid-season, fall finale! It was packed with a lot of answers and a lot of questions. Let’s unpack.
Annalise gives her graduating class a heart-felt goodbye, to which afterwards, she attends a faculty party with Tegan. Having not signed a new teaching contract, Tegan thinks this means Annalise is going to be at Caplan & Gold full-time, but she claims her mother isn’t doing well. While we all know that’s true to a degree, the real reason is confirmed when we flash to a news reporter stating that Sam’s death is being looked into again because they got tipped off that Wes didn’t act alone.
Zip over to the K5 house, and we see them spiraling a little after some mushrooms that Oliver gave them. In the midst of all of that, Laurel, who’s been MIA all season, face times the group telling them she isn’t the FBI’s informant. She also reveals that Tegan is the one who helped her and Christopher disappear. Before we get any more answers she hangs up, leaving the rest of Keating 5 scrambling to figure out who the mole is.
Annalise is shown back at her house, about to enlist the help of the VIP services when Nate shows up. He’s seething mad at Annalise for hiding the truth and essentially making him a murderer. He looks like he’s about to snap when she tells him that “she chose him because I knew I could control you.” Ouch. We also see that infamous fire-poker! But it’s just a red-herring, as he leaves bitterly shortly after.
Back at the K5 house, everyone is feeling the effects of the mushrooms except for Asher, which is a red-flag for Michaela, regardless if she’s high or not. After some yelling (normal), Asher fesses up to being the informant. But it seems his family is to blame, and he also hasn’t really been helping the FBI too much. He explains that when he awkwardly tried to kiss Michaela a few episodes back, it was so she would confess anything while he was recording for the FBI. Both Michaela and Connor are all rightfully mad, and then we think it’s the end for Asher when Oliver hits him in the back of the head with a fire-poker. False alarm.
We then are in the present with the flash-forward of Asher going to Bonnie’s house. Although still angry with Frank, she calls him and tells him to come over. Meanwhile, we see Annalise on a super-turbulent plane, and then we see Michaela and Conner getting arrested for the death of…Asher! Someone finished him off, although we don’t know who. We see him take his last breath of life right outside of his and Gabriel’s apartment. We then get a little flash forward back at Annalise’s funeral, where someone really close to her gets invited up to go speak. And that person sure looked a whole heck of a lot like Wes!
So many questions! On the way to the airport, Annalise told the driver to turn back. Why? Who killed Asher? Frank? Gabriel? What are the details behind Laurel and Teagan’s escape plan? Who really killed Emmet? What role will Annalise’s new boyfriend ultimately play? And what in the hell is Wes not doing dead???
My only two stray observations are that Nate still serves almost no purpose on this show. I wish they would just get rid of his character. And two, Annalise keeps claiming that she’s innocent, and sure, she hasn’t actually killed anyone herself, but she’s by no means kept her hands out of any of the drama leading up to those murders! I think it’s time she got hers.
