Midnight Sun by Stephenie Meyer Book Review

I warned you all back when I read Twilight that I was doing it in anticipation of the release of Midnight Sun, and it’s here! While it took me an obscenely long time to finish, that does not mean I didn’t like it. In fact, the opposite is true – I loved it! So, so much.

I don’t really know what there is to say here that is new because it is the same exact plot as Twilight, only told from Edward’s perspective. Sure, the point of view is different, but the events are identical. It was very fun to hear Edward’s inner dialogue, but when it comes to Bella, a lot of the same things got said. After his initial dislike because her scent was so appealing, he immediately fell for her and was always talking about it. He also voiced a lot about how frustrating it was to not be able to hear her thoughts. Then it was a non-stop back and forth about how he was going to walk away from her because it wasn’t safe. Come on, man! At 658 pages, that got a little old, but overall, Edward was on just the right side of sassy and it was fun to hear his siblings’ inner thoughts.

It was also very nice to spend more time with the Cullens in general. As expected, Carlisle and Esme were very kind and supportive, while Alice was a little firecracker. By the end though, Jasper and Emmett ended up becoming my low-key favorites of the novel. If Stephenie Meyer decides not to write any more books from Edward’s perspective, I’d love to see a one-off about Alice and Jasper or even Emmett and Rosalie (even if she’s still the worst). Jasper is much more complex than Twilight gave him credit for, although to be fair, he was trying to avoid slipping up in Bella’s presence.

Overall, I loved this switch up and I’m so happy it finally got released after all these years. Even though I’ll be let down if nothing else comes of this resurgence, I can’t complain since the world finally got this out of her. I’m sure as I said after re-reading Twilight, that I’m ever so tempted to watch the movie again, and I can’t totally rule it out after finishing this book, but I just know I’ll be ruining the experience for myself. Time will tell! If you were a fan of the original series, then what are you waiting for?!
