It’s only three day’s worth, but I watched so many movies, that even I’m impressed with myself. My choices, however…not all were great. Far more were mediocre or less, but I’ll just throw in my two cents with the briefest of recaps and then you can judge for yourselves.
Archive – A little bit of Ex Machina and a little bit of Upload, but with a twist! I don’t really know how to explain this anymore than that robots in a deserted winter landscape. Plus, Theo James is pretty nice to look at. Although, if you just want one robot movie in your life, I don’t know that this would be my first choice.
The High Note – Tracee Ellis Ross’ character is insufferable, but this movie has enough levity and feel good moments for me to ignore. Kelvin Harrison Jr. is almost the singular delight in this movie while the rest sort of fall flat. Overall, an enjoyable time, and now that you can rent it for under $20, it’d be an investment worth making.
No Escape – My sister and good friend have been trying to force this movie on me since it came out five years ago, and I even suffered through a trip to West Virginia to avoid it, but a birthday selection finally saw me give my hand. It wasn’t quite as awful as I suspected it was going to be, but it made having children seem even more undesirable than before. It also made me realize I’d never want to live in Asia, fiction or not.
The Martian – Another birthday selection that my sister had to suffer through this time, which is a shame because this movie is delightful. Even though the studio didn’t know how to market it for awards season (here’s looking at you “Best Musical or Comedy”), it was still a dramatic moments with hints of humor laced throughout this sometimes stressful space film. Matt Damon excelled, but you can’t ignore the incredible supporting cast that got roped into this either!
Project Power – What a fun film this turned out to be! All the leads were incredibly likable. Jamie Foxx, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, and Dominique Fishback all brought some hilarious sass to this action/comic book inspired film. There’s a heartfelt human story underneath the powers that are the focus of the film, and it’s even better for that. If sci-fi is your thing, this is another feather in Netflix’s cap.
Work It – I fully anticipated this movie being extremely corny, and while it had its moments, it was also very funny. Plus all that dancing was impressive as hell! It reminds me of The Duff, in that it’s a feel-good film that I think I’ll find myself watching over and over again throughout the rest of the year.
The Lost Husband – I don’t know why I tried to fool myself with this one. Yes, I like Leslie Bibb, and yes, I like Josh Duhamel, but this was one of those awful romance movies, like The Last Song or Dear John. Ugh, gag. From the very start I should have known I would hate it because a farm becomes involved almost immediately. While the acting was decent, the entirely obvious set-up just had me rolling my eyes from start to painful finish. But if this type of movie is how you choose to entertain yourself, then you could do far worse than watching this one, I suppose.
