People. The fourth episode of the final season of Mr. Robot got me in all the feels! Be prepared for SPOILERS!
While not much in the way of action happened, there were three very distinct paths that were followed last night, and each were compelling in their own right. The least interesting story line saw Dom alone in her apartment trying to connect with an old internet flame. After meeting up with an equally lonely women, she is suddenly being drowned by her, as she’s a Dark Army drone. Luckily we learn this is all some terrible dream (although truthfully I wouldn’t mind seeing her go).
Interspersed throughout we see Darlene at her most vulnerable while giving a drunk cancer center Santa a ride home. While Santa says some enlightening and equally dark things, this tale had the most humor sprinkled throughout, but we finally got to see Darlene with some real meat in her scenes. She breaks down that she’s tired of being treated like crap by her brother, the only person she has left, but she’s also afraid he may be dead.
Which brings us to the most interesting story of the night: that of Elliot, Mr. Robot, and Tyrell. After Tyrell kills the Dark Army agent that was listening in, Elliot (and Mr. Robot) join him to dispose of him and the van. After dealing with a highly irritating clerk, they lose the van and get equally as lost in the woods. This is a moment in the show I’ve been waiting for since season one. Tyrell confronts Elliot and tells him he’s jealous of his lack of caring, because he tries so much, and that has only lost him everything in the end. When asking Elliot if he cares about it, Elliot screams back that he doesn’t, but in the end Elliot tells Tyrell that he may be the only person that actually likes Elliot.
They find the van, but Tyrell ends up getting shot. Elliot doesn’t want to leave Tyrell to die, but he walks off to die alone in the woods anyways, so that Elliot can complete their mission. Sure, the saddest character death of the show for me by a landslide, but did he really die? We see him stumble towards a blue light, but we never actually see him die. Also, the credits are black on white rather than their usual white on black. What in the hell does all this mean?! I have no clue, but most theories I’ve seen allude to an alternate or parallel universe in which Tyrell (and maybe Angela) may not be dead.
Here’s hoping people! I am literally going insane already and there’s still a whole week I have to wait!
