Music Review: Tame Impala

My music listening continues! As does my drawing, which is why the music is happening more. This time, I popped in Tame Impala’s records, Currents and The Slow Rush. Since the latter album just dropped on Valentine’s Day, I really haven’t had the opportunity to give it a listen. And since it’s been four years since the release of Currents, I decided to give that another spin.

I remember back in 2015 when I got my tickets to attend my first ever Bunbury Music Festival, I saw Tame Impala’s name high up on the roster. Never heard of them in my life, so naturally I checked them out. Lucky for me, Currents was brand spanking new in the world, so I found “The Less I Know the Better,” and I fell in love. Never has a bass line been so strong and funky! This is one of two songs that I will blast in my car, and that’s saying something. As far as the rest of the album goes, it wasn’t all winners for me, but I equally enjoyed the opening track, “Let It Happen,” along with the closing track, “New Person, Same Old Mistakes.” This record lyrically, is very clearly describing a transitional phase, most notably relationships. I dig it, and so should you!

Once I got The Slow Rush spinning, it was clear to me that this was a natural transformation for Tame Impala to take, as it still had some callback elements to Currents running through some of the tracks. I do know that this album had some singles released back in 2019, with the album itself dropping almost a full year later, and I could sort of tell. Some of the songs just don’t seem to flow together. Either way, the real standouts on this album were “Boarderline,” “Is It True,” and my personal favorite, “It Might Be Time.” What’s better than being able to sing an insult at my sister? “You’re not as cool as you used to be” should be a sentence in everyone’s arsenal. That song might also be the most exciting one off the record, where in comparison, most of Currents’ tunes were upbeat. Ultimately, I’m glad I gave this record a full listen.
