My Golden Blood Series Review

I swear that My Golden Blood had been in talks for years before it finally saw the light of day. Who knows what took it so long to finally come together, but now somehow it’s finally over!

I will admit, this series made me cringe more than I was hoping to. As far as GMMTV series go, maybe this particular story was too serious for its typical production budget. But before I get into that, perhaps a high level overview of the story would be helpful. Tong is a 20 year old student who is just getting ready to go to university. This is a huge deal because all of his life he’s been sheltered and told that he has hemophilia – any dangerous activity could put his life at risk. While the disease isn’t true, it is true that his life is in danger. From vampires!

Apparently Tong has what is known as the “golden blood.” It both smells and tastes delicious, but it also gives the vampire who drinks it immense power. Helping keep an eye on Tong is a powerful vampire sect, led by Thara. She seems to have a cohort of good vampires on her side, which include loyal member, Mark. With that being said, she also has Nakan as part of her family and he seems hell bent on getting the golden blood for himself to wreck havoc on all vampires. It’s Mark’s sole duty to watch over and protect Tong.

Now that he is in university, though, it makes Mark’s job increasingly difficult. It’s at this time that Tong is made privy to his actual condition. At first, he takes all of this secrecy and protection as an extreme insult and tries everything in his ability to lose Mark and Thara. Eventually, Tong realizes that his disdain for Mark might have actually morphed into a crush. Mark is in the same boat, though he has to reassure himself that his feelings aren’t being driven by the influence of the golden blood. Of course, their love is stronger than any conflict and evil they may endure, so fear not.

In that regard, this is a pretty typical vampire tale. This series, as I said before, lost me a bit with some of its production value, as well as some of the dialogue. Some of the special effects used to mimic vampire abilities were super cringe, but I went in kind of expecting that to be the case. It was also hard for me to tell if certain dialogue wouldn’t have sounded as bad if it wasn’t delivered so over the top. The other thing that really took away from some scenes was the abrupt change of music. Sometimes directly in the middle of a scene it felt like the whole genre of song playing completely changed! Such a weird choice.

Do I regret tuning into this series for the last twelve weeks? Hell no. With all of the series’ flaws, there is no denying that Joss and Gawin have excellent chemistry. Admittedly, this was something I was most concerned about before the series started. Yes, they are both extremely handsome guys, but all I had seen of their relationship and interactions prior to the series all made them out to be just super good bros. Which they totally can be! I was just nervous it would make any intimate scenes come across super uncomfortable. I’m glad to say I was wrong, and I look forward to seeing how much more they grow as a pair in the second season of Only Friends!
