My School President + Bonus Episodes Review

Though this BL just came out at the beginning of 2023, many viewers have marked My School President as one of the best ones out there! I have seen the leads in Moonlight Chicken, so it was just a matter of time before I checked this one out.

Overall, I can say this series was “cute.” Was it my favorite? No. And honestly, I don’t think I’d even include it in my top ten, but it was still enjoyable. What I did walk away from here with was another side couple I’d really like to see get their own series. More on that as the review continues. In the series, Gun is the leader of the school band, Chinzilla, whose dream is to win the Hot Wave contest. The biggest hurdle he faces in that dream though is keeping his club around! The new school president wants any clubs that aren’t useful to the school to be closed down within the week, and her son Tinn, the student president, is on board with that sentiment. That means Gun and his friends in Chinzilla have a very limited amount of time to prove themselves!

They win a competition, but the school’s president still insists on the disbandment of the club. She does give them a chance, as long as they can pass all of their midterm exams. Though Tinn appears from a distance to be Chinzilla’s biggest hater, he actually harbors a crush on Gun and we see him working stealthily behind the scenes to help the band succeed. With the studying for the exams, he gets another opportunity to express his feelings, but ultimately loses his nerve. He also has to keep in mind that the number one rule of the band is there is no dating, as it distracts from their dedication. Before long though, it is clear that Gun also has feelings for Tinn. Once they finally realize this, they are careful to keep their flirting under the radar, but still find ways to be cute to each other. I don’t think their attraction for one another is that surprising to anyone else in the band, but it’s nice to see them try.

As is the case with most BLs, there is not just the main couple we get the pleasure of seeing, but some side couples! Win and Sound, two members of Chinzilla, kind of hate each other’s guts until they have to “kiss” for a music video they are filming. This for sure does something in the feels to Sound, though it’s clear Win is warming up to him, too. Their scenes just made me grin like a little girl, and I know we will get to see these two actors again in an upcoming series this year, but I’d sure like to see them lead a series in the future! Another couple that barely had any forward movement was between Chinzilla member, Por, and Tinn’s best friend, Thiu. Though their interactions were minimal, they still had a sweetness that was obvious to the naked eye.

This series was also a part of Our Skyy2, so that means they got some special episodes! Similar to Never Let Me Go, this series also had an alternate universe going on. In fact, the intro to their episodes dubbed them “My School President and the Multiverse of Cuteness.” Adorable. In this universe, all of the roles were reversed, so that means Tinn is the leader of Lion, and Gun is the school president. I did appreciate though that almost everyone’s personalities remained virtually unchanged. These two episodes, while still focused on Tinn and Gun’s relationship, spent a more considerable amount of time on the other two couples. And they actually threw in another couple! Student council member Jorn and Chinzilla member Pat! They were sweet, too.

Overall, I did enjoy this series, though it kind of dragged for me at times. I enjoyed the special episodes a lot, but that’s because I was familiar with the story and they condensed it in a way where nothing felt omitted, but still gave the other couples more opportunities to shine. I also figured out early on that there was going to be lots of singing in this series, but I did not find any of them to super awkward or bad! In fact, most of them were quite catchy. I’d say if the BL scene is your thing, this is definitely a nice palate cleanser.
