My Secret Vampire Series Review

I am trying, and failing, to squeeze in as much television as possible now that the end of the year is imminent. And while there are still a ton of shows I even just need to catch up on the most recent season, I couldn’t resist starting this short KBL when it popped up on iQiyi’s home page. I find it hard to dislike much about a show called My Secret Vampire.

Because really, spooky season has only just passed, and who doesn’t like cute vampire things? Especially if those vampires are played by cute guys? I know I’m not the strongest soldier. Anyway, as most K-dramas are, this series was a crisp eight episodes barely sitting at fifteen to twenty minutes a piece. That both delights and frustrates me. I love having more time to watch other things, but if something is done well, I want more of it, dammit! The other bright spot is that we don’t have to waste time with any filler. Thai BLs could take a page out of the K-drama’s book with that at least.

Dongha is gearing up to start university, but slightly prior to that he temporarily moves into a shared house that happens to be inhabited by four other vampires. I don’t know what the girl was thinking who sublet her room out to this kid, but she must have confidence in their willpower. And for the most part, they do. In fact, it doesn’t seem like at least two of the roommates have ever had real, fresh, human blood before. They typically live off of a plasma substitute. Though the closed off Juwon seems to know that Seonjae may prove to be a bad influence on his roommates, so he makes it his mission to protect Dongha. But just because Juwon is acting as a protector doesn’t mean he gets all warm and fuzzy with Dongha.

In fact, he is quite cold towards him for quite a while, but it’s clear his aggressive “hatred” is just a cover for how bad he is actually crushing on him. Acting as a distant protector doesn’t last long, and soon they are spending more and more time together before Juwon finally gets brave and acts on his feelings. It helps that Dongha 100 percent reciprocates them. Gosh, were they freaking cute together. Of course, Dongha still has no clue that all of his roommates are vampires, so that leads to some fears on Juwon’s part. Naturally, that will cause the only real conflict in the show, but that scene is acted so perfectly. Thankfully, with such a short series in more than one sense, that conflict is resolved swiftly and we get our happy ending.

I really enjoyed this and I hope I am successful in finding more series like this one. Though it’s hard to compare to some of the first BLs I’ve seen, this one was extremely cute and the leads had great chemistry. Maybe we will see more from them in the future!
