Network Television Review

With a new week this month comes the return of some more of my favorite shows! Well, the return was of Big Sky, so I guess not my favorite shows, but it’s still something.

9-1-1 Lone Star: While Tommy isn’t totally over her return to work jitters, she may also have to start worrying about the camaraderie with her team. Owen gets to avoid celebrating his remission news because he still feels guilt over coming out of the events of 9/11 alive. Most of the action this week though centers around some direct and indirect influences of a volcano that’s decided to start unleashing some pressure (and magma) into any crack it can find in Austin. This means a girl tries to fend off a herd of scorpions in her food truck (yay for that Carlos rescue!) and a man’s flesh gets partially melted onto a mini-golf sculpture! Everything culminates into a pool party where I assume someone got boiled alive, someone else had to get a piece of lava rock removed before his heart got cooked, and sadly, Tommy’s teammate, Tim, gets killed by another large piece of rock. The melancholy energy that brings to the entire Austin FD is palpable, but it’s also the kick in the pants Tommy needs to become a leader again and connect with the people she’s working with. In other news, we’re getting a 9-1-1 and 9-1-1 Lone Star Crossover event next week, so I’m looking forward to that!

Prodigal Son: Alright, I’m convinced that this show is starting to take the right steps and that maybe someday it’ll drop the whole procedural element altogether. I say that because it’s becoming abundantly clear that Malcolm isn’t as resistant as we were all led to believe. Sure, he has horrific nightmares about his past and also that whole cutting up a body thing from the present, but he did some stuff. We are introduced to some of that other “past stuff” during this week’s episode. The latest murder is that of Malcolm’s old boarding school headmaster, who was killed and then set up in an underwater office located perfectly at the bottom of a pool. It’s clear that this place rattles Malcolm, but it takes some time to figure out why. In the meantime, JT is out this week with the arrival of his new baby, there is no Ainsley either, along with very limited time with Edrisa (although props to her for getting clocked in the face). All Gil and Jessica are really good for this week is acting like teenagers in a mildly toxic relationship. Martin however, is making moves to escape and it’s looking like it might actually happen next week. I’m hoping that’s where the real fun begins. Anyways, back to Malcolm’s fear of this school. Turns out his new name couldn’t stop some students from finding out who he really is and gets locked in a janitor’s closet for three days. Thus begins the hand tremors. His retaliation? Empty a kids inhaler and then spur an asthmatic episode. That kid definitely almost died, but he called for help basically at the last minute. Malcolm’s got a darkness that I hope he embrace soon. It would make this show pretty awesome!

Big Sky: Back after a winter hiatus, we pick up right where we left off, which was with Legarski on the floor with a bullet in his head. Unfortunately for Cassie he’s still twitching on the ground when the local sheriff gets to the basement. It sucks that Cassie gets grilled for this since Legarski never actually drew his weapon (we all know he would have!). Anyways, the girls are saved – yay! And when Jenny shows up onto the scene she’s obviously asking about Cody. Cut to a small flash-forward where we see his truck being pulled out of a pit (with his silhouette in their, too!). Jenny rightfully loses it, and we see Cassie struggling with how to handle her loss, too. I did enjoy the funeral they put together for Cody, and the two women find some common ground while singing Cody’s favorite song together (side note: why is there so much freaking singing in this show???). The next morning they agree to team up to find Ronald who is still at large. Ronald proves himself to be more crafty then I was ever giving him credit for. He’s changing everything about his truck and is laying as low as he can, but he knows he’s got to get the files out of Legarski’s secret room before the cops stumble upon it. No luck with that in this episode, but he does manage to instill more fear into Jerrie by taping a threatening note on her door. Luckily for her, she’s just agreed to help Jenny and Cassie out in whatever way she can. Of course the last scene of the episode show Legarski’s eyes popping open. I will say, this was a good comeback episode for this show, but I still remain skeptical about how this show look for the next ten episodes. We shall see!
