New Music Monday

New singles have been dropping this early this year and I am so excited! And even better, by some of my favorite bands who have been MIA for a few years. As if 2020 hadn’t sucked enough all on its own, it didn’t really help that not a lot of music seemed to get released. As of now, I think that’s all about to change! At least for me, anyway! If you like rock, then keep reading to get some new singles in your life!

AFI
Twisted Tongues – To me, this song appears to be a seamless transition from The Blood Album. It just sounds like something that could have been created around the same time, which is fine by me! I really liked how different that album was. Anyway, the most striking part about this song is the drums! Adam is seriously ripping on them throughout. I will very much be looking forward to watching him perform that in a live setting (eventually). Otherwise, the songs is, as usual, a perfect mix of instrumentals and Davey’s vocals. I love it, and can’t wait for a new album!

Los Angeles – Now, AFI’s second single sounded like a complete departure from their past sound, and I instantly liked it. It almost sounded like a bit of Blaqk Audio’s sound got mixed with the typical AFI sound. I’m here for it! Also, the “video” that was put together for the song was pretty funny. It featured an almost stormy view of what I assume was Los Angeles, but then added in a spaceship, a sky full of donuts, and those streamer men you usually see at car dealerships. It’s hard to way with these two very different singles which direction the full album will lean into, but I’ll like it either way.

Royal Blood
Trouble’s Coming – Holy cow! I can’t believe how much time has gone by without new music from Royal Blood. It’s almost a crime! Either way, they’re back and we’re getting a full album sooner rather than later (March!). The first released single off the upcoming record, Typhoons, seems like a natural progression for the band to take from their sophomore effort, How Did We Get So Dark?. While I enjoyed that second album, I can already tell based off the two singles released that I’ll probably like this one better! They just take what they do well and amp it up! It’s still just a bass guitar and drums, but they manage to make a huge sound that other rock bands should be jealous of. This time around I imagine there will be more help with some back-up vocals, but I can’t fault them for that. You can’t elevate if you don’t change at least a little bit. Love this song!

Typhoons -The band’s next single, named after the upcoming record is just as good, if not better than the first released single. This one just proves that the album is not only going to be something you can rock to, but also groove to! It’s an exciting step that the band is taking, and it just gets me more excited to see them again in a live setting. This song features some more of those back-up vocals I was talking about, but they take this song to another level by making it sound both melodic and chaotic at the same time. Genius! You can’t go wrong adding either of these songs to a playlist.

Death From Above 1979
One + One – Another rock duo that hasn’t released anything new in the past three years, is the gritty and bombastic Death From Above 1979. I was very excited to see a video for this new single pop up on my Youtube feed a few days ago. As if only having a bass guitarist and a drummer isn’t simple enough, it appears that the drumming in this song is solely made up of a bass and snare drum and a cymbal! They managed to create such a crisp sound with just that as the constant throughout, and then the bass-playing is just next level. I last saw these guys at a festival five years ago, and I intend to change that once we all can again! This sound isn’t for everyone, but if you’re looking for more solid rock with some fantastic vocals, then give this band a listen!
