I can’t believe it’s the final season of Servant! This insanely intriguing show is some of M. Night Shyamalan’s best work, and it delivered right to the end.
Also, I can’t believe it took me eight months to finally sit down and watch it! I’ve been seriously slacking on finishing up some of the best series I’ve been watching over the years. Probably because I don’t want them to end. But sadly, all good things must come to an end, and this is no exception. I can also appreciate creators knowing that just because you could get many more seasons doesn’t mean you have to.
At the end of the third season, we see Dorothy get “pushed” over the railing on the third floor of the Turner’s home all because she tried to get rid of Leanne. Cue some months later and we see Leanne still at the Turner home, prepping for Dorothy’s return. Not surprisingly, we also see a chair lift snaking up all of the stairs. Yup, Dorothy is kind of paralyzed from the waist down. For now anyway. Also not too surprising is how morose Dorothy is. Not only can she not walk, but she can’t go care for Jericho, and her own husband and brother seemingly chose Leanne over her.
The first few episodes really show Leanne and Dorothy pettily one-upping each other in ways that they can somewhat torture each other. Leanne still seems to be living her best life though. Even though the cult is more determined than ever to bring her back, she has her own legions of followers who are always around to protect her. As the series goes on though, Leanne finds more and more that she can protect herself. She becomes angry more easily and is able to manipulate all sorts of things.
It’s an odd séance (too hard to explain) that really shifts things for Leanne and the rest of the family. Leanne realizes that she is destructive and that if she sticks around long-term she could really be dangerous, but she’s too attached to the Turners to do anything about it. It’s not until the final hour that Dorothy realizes that what Leanne has wanted all along was a mother that loved her. She didn’t get that in her childhood, but felt that Dorothy could be that for her. After all the torment that Leanne has put them through, they all really do love and care for her in the end.
There! That’s the least spoiler-y review I could give of this uniquely supernatural series’ final season. If you’ve not checked this show out before, I’m telling you now it’s worth it! While it’s sold as a horror show, I promise it’s mainly just eerie. A terrific watch!
