A little late in the week, I know, but that doesn’t mean I still can’t catch you up to speed on what went down this week on Animal Kingdom and Roswell, New Mexico. Enough chit-chat and let’s get on with it!

A more typical weekend means a more typical amount of movies. No fear! They were all pretty dang entertaining, so let’s get into it!

This weekend I managed to squeeze in quite an eclectic mix of films whenever I could! Let’s get to it!
Read moreBook Review: The Lost Book of the White by Cassandra Clare and Wesley Chu
It’s been a good couple years since the finale of Shadowhunters aired, and just about two years since I’ve last read anything about this wonderful cast of characters, so when I saw I’d been sleeping on the release of the second book in the Eldest Curses trilogy, The Lost Book of the White, I immediately went to my local library to rent it out. It was a quick read, given how much I love the series, and this adventure was just as fun as the first outing of the trilogy!

Are you really at all surprised that so soon after watching the first two season of A Discovery of Witches that I would start reading the books? It really should come as no shock. Seeing as I burn through shows and movies as quick as I can, I figure if I like something enough I want to read the book before too many details escape my memory. That’s why as soon as I saw it was available I went to the closest library to rent the first book in Deborah Harkness’ All Souls Trilogy, A Discovery of Witches.

I first heard about A Discovery of Witches, based on Deborah Harkness’ All Souls trilogy, back in 2018 just before it was about to come out. Yes, my Film Independent membership certainly helps with this, but if you look they are there. You just have to be more open to some indie titles!

Back in 2018, Jeff VanderMeer’s sci-fi horror novel, Annihilation, got the Hollywood treatment and was adapted into a pretty well-received feature film. It also starred the likes of Natalie Portman, Oscar Isaac, and Jennifer Jason Leigh. It looked rather intriguing, but also like it might scare the poo out of me. So I skipped it. Recently, I’ve been seeing the title pop up on Hulu and I’ve been tempted to play it some nights, but I decided to give it The Haunting at Hill House treatment and read the novel first.

On the last day of the AFI Film Festival, I was able to squeeze in two more movies that I was itching to see. Both were strange in their own ways, but enjoyably unique.
Read moreBook Review: Dark Matter by Blake Crouch
My friend has a super sweet book subscription and she is nice enough to share with me, so that means I got to read a sci-fi thriller that I’d never heard of written by someone I’d also never heard of! But this is a good thing. It’s expanded my horizons and if I really didn’t want to read it I would have told her so, but I trust her book judgement. And I was right to! Dark Matter by Blake Crouch was pretty awesome.
