Weekend Movie Review

I didn’t get to end the month as storngly as I’d hoped, but I did get one final pride film in!

Supergirl – It didn’t get as much fanfare as last year’s Superman, but still, I knew I’d be seeing this. Kara is Clark’s younger cousin who’s decided that she’d like to be removed from her powers in order to live her version of a college life. One where she gets plastered every night and hangs out with her dog. Plans change when a young girl seeks revenge on some gross, power hungry guy who’s killed her family in his quest to capture young girls to keep his planet’s population going. Kara can’t seem to not help the helpless, but her mission becomes more serious when her dog’s life is in the balance. This movie is all about female power with the soundtrack to prove it, but it was a good ride!

Office Romance – I will admit that this rom-com ended up not being what I expected at all. It was significantly more raunchy! J-Lo plays a boss bitch who is trying to get a lawsuit settled. She has to rely on new, British hire, Daniel, who finds he’s immediately attracted to his boss. For me, I think J-Lo’s character is more drawn by the attention, but that doesn’t stop them from crossing the line many times and trying desparately to hide their relationship from HR. Both of them aren’t as forthcoming as they’d like the other to be, and it seems like their personal lives could really benefit from each other being in it. I had several hard cackles (thank you, Betty Gilpin), but this is ultimately something I wouldn’t revisit.

A Nice Indian Boy – I’d been meaning to watch this movie when it came out a couple of years ago but always put it on the back burner. What a cute film this ended up being! Naveen has been thinking about how a traditional Indian wedding is going to look as a gay man. His parents seem to be on board with his sexuality for the most part, but Naveen has kept himself so busy that he may never even get married. Then one day he meets Jay, a white photographer who happened to be adopted by Indian parents, so he’s quite familiar with Naveen’s life. Their path to the altar is not a smooth one, and while a lot of it has to do with tradition, it also has a lot to do with Naveen not getting out of his own way. Would be worth the watch for sure!
