Weekend Movie Review

I wish there would have been more time for movies this weekend, but I’ve got a week full of Sundance features coming up, so I suppose I’ll make up for it. While there were a couple new titles this weekend, I went for some re-watches, as well. I know, who has time for that?! Well, sometimes I make time.

All About Fate – Friday night came by with not much time by the end of the evening and it had been a long week, so I decided I wanted a comfort movie. Granted, this is a pretty new comfort movie, but based on this weekend and the couple other times I’ve watched it already, I just know it’s going to be a frequent comfort movie. Given that it takes place during the holiday season, now is still the time to bust this one out. It’s just too darn cute! It’s funny, too, and in my mind, that’s a good rom-com. It manages to miss all the horribly corny clichés a lot of holiday films portray, so I promise this is worth your time.

Missing – Now, Saturday is the day for new, so I headed to the theater with my sister and our friend to see this stand-alone sequel to 2018’s Searching. There are certainly some similarities in the plot compared to the “original,” but a lot of it is totally new and the twists are just as deliciously shocking! June is left alone for about a week while her mom is on vacation in Columbia with her new boyfriend. Cut to her going to pick them up at the airport and they never show. I’m kind of impressed with how quickly June is freaked out by this and launches into action. Sure, authorities are doing a lot, but June goes into some sort of super-sleuth mode and the truths she uncovers are very interesting. For those worried about this all being shot through “the internet,” don’t worry. It’s not disorienting, rather, a really neat way to tell this story. Definitely check these out!

Door Mouse – From a high, high level, this story kind of reminded me of a Sherlock and Holmes type adventure if it were set in a more modern day, noir setting. Mouse is a dancer at a club just trying to get by while also attempting to launch a popular comic. Other girls at the club start disappearing, so she teams up with Ugly (an actually very cute guy) to find out what’s going on. It’s the way she interacts with people that reminds me of Sherlock a little bit, with not much regard for herself, a passive ease in tough situations, and a fighting spirit. I also love the lengths she’s willing to go to in order to find these women. What’s probably more fascinating to me about this film is that it’s the directorial debut for Avan Jogia, who also wrote the script. If this manages to gain a cult following, I could see this story expanding into further installments.

Matthias & Maxime – Right after I watched this movie for the first time a few weeks ago, I immediately looked for a copy to get my hands on. Well, obviously I got it because here we are. Actually, I’d had it in my possession for about two weeks, but I’ve been itching to watch it again since that first viewing. It’s just such a unique and touching story about the close and long friendship between Matthias and Maxime essentially changing in an instant after participating in a student film. It’s wild to see what each man goes through when the relationship as they knew it gets turned on its head. There were even more details to catch this time around, and I love the intricate relationships between this large friend group. Did I mention before how freaking amazing the soundtrack is. If you can swing it, check this film out!
