Weekend Movie Review

I’ve done better and I’ve done worse in terms of quantity and quality, but I’ll consider this weekend’s movie prospects a success regardless. Your high level recap awaits!

What We Do in the Shadows – Honestly, I don’t know why it took me this long to watch this film! And the FX show that’s been spawned from it for that matter (adding it to my watch-list immediately)! This film, shot documentary-style, follows vampire flat-mates and their daily activities. Hysterical. The scene-stealer, though, has to be the Nosferatu looking Petyr.

Humpday – I had low expectations for this film by the late director, Lynn Shelton, and the bar was met, and then somewhat exceeded. Nothing too earth-shattering, though. Filmed in a gritty, almost documentary style way, this followed two straight friends who decide to make a gay porn for a local festival. Love Mark Duplass, didn’t love this film.

Last Moment of Clarity – I wanted to like this so much more than I did! Brian Cox! Samara Weaving! A thriller! All of the ingredients for a good film, but it just fell flat for me. A man who watched the murder of his soon-to-be wife spirals until a few years later when he thinks he sees her on the silver screen. A few turns, but nothing too compelling.

The Assistant – Easily the best film I watched all weekend! At first I was really nervous that this was going to be slow and boring. It was indeed slow, but nowhere near boring. You got to see the inner workings of the bottom of the ladder assistant position to someone of a Roger Ailes status. This girl is put through hell in the longest working day that probably ever existed. It’s quite eye-opening, and I’m sure for people in the industry, very relatable.
