Weekend Movie Review

You know, just because you go to a foreign country, it does not mean you can’t watch movies. They’re on the plane! And the new ones are still there for you when you get home.

Moonrise Kingdom – While I wanted to watch Decision to Leave, I decided that one was best suited to my quiet home than on a noisy plane. Therefore, I settled on one of my favorites by Wes Anderson. I know it’s good when my friend questioned the style afterwards. It’s unique, quirky, funny, and original, and that’s why I love it so much. On a strange little island, Sam and Suzie run away from the scouts and smothering family, respectively, to be together because they are in love. I forgot how terrific Bruce Willis is in this, but really everyone shines.

Cape Fear – Sure, this movie is a Scorsese classic and it came out the year I was born. What really struck me was just how young Robert De Niro, Jessica Lange, Nick Nolte, and Juliette Lewis all looked! I understand that was 31 years ago, but I have only seen most of these people’s older work. It was a wild sight. While most of this movie was taut with lots of thrills, there were moments, given how old the film was, that did kind of make me laugh when they probably shouldn’t have. Oh, well. Still enjoyable.

Sisu – I went into this thinking it was going to be a lot like John Wick, except the main motivator was getting money for his gold. The gold was the dog in this instance I suppose, even though there was a dog in a lot of the film. Anyways, this movie ended up being a lot slower than I had imagined, but it wasn’t any less brutal. Truly, in that regard, the high octane scenes really shined because you worked your way towards them. Again, this man just wanted to get paid for his gold, so naturally he was going to mow down any of the Nazis that got in his way. Great fun!

Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. – Admittedly, I have never read the Judy Bloom book that this film was based on, but I liked the actors in it and the trailer made me laugh. That’s really all it takes sometimes to convince me to watch something. With that, this movie ended up being a really enjoyable and largely relatable film about growing up. All 11-year-old Margaret wants to find out is what religion she should be, but she ends up finding out a whole lot about herself along the way. Feel good film for sure.

Ghosted – Sigh. Another disappointing rom-com. This one had so much promise, too! Chris Evans and Ana de Armas are hot, but despite their own personal sizzle and history working on films together, something here just did not click. That’s not to say I hated watching this or anything, but I know if you ask me about it next month I’d have trouble telling you about it. Also, Evans’ Cole is creepy! I don’t blame Armas’ Sadie for ghosting him – I would, too! I’m hating on this movie, but there were a string of super fun cameos that made my face light up, so you could tune in for that at least.
