Weekend Movie Review

Admittedly, I fell short this weekend with no good excuse. But, I did watch two movies and one of them was incredible! And probably not the one you think!

The Childe – This, my friends, is the incredible movie I had the pleasure of watching this weekend. Sadly, from my home, but still. Every Friday I will scroll through what’s new to rent in the Play store, and the cover art for this film caught my eye. The two sentences dedicated to its plot were vague and intriguing enough that I went through with the purchase, and Saturday night I just felt that it was the right time to fire this up. Going in basically blind, this movie was a trip. Even about halfway through, I still wasn’t totally sure what the punch was going to be, but I can assure you it delivered! Marco is a young man in the Philippines trying to locate his Korean father to help pay for his mother’s surgery. Out of the blue, men that work for his father come to Marco to take him to Korea, and just starting with the plane ride, Marco is going to come to regret taking this journey. There are plenty of unhinged characters in this film, but that just makes the action more awesome and even provides a lot more intentional laughs than I was expecting. If you can handle subtitles, I beg you to watch this film! I know it’s early in the year, but I’d be willing to be you’ll see this in my top ten.

Dune: Part Two – Ohhh, I know nerds and film Twitter want me to like this so much, but it’s just fine. Just like the first film. People were hyping this up to be insane and based on how much world building was done in the first film, I too, was expecting to be blown away. Let me clarify. It was good and held my attention, but if you asked me in a few months what happened in this film, I probably couldn’t tell you. In fact, when part two started I was thinking that I probably should have at least read a recap of what happened in the first film because I was blanking hard. Anyway, Paul Atredies and his mother are the only survivors from the massacre on his people and now dedicates his life to the Fremen who spend most of their days fending off attacks from the Harkonnen. It’s all about power in this world, much like our own, and Paul and his mother get some super creepy dead people powers that show a future that Paul leads. There were some effective new characters added in this film, and some others whose purpose I am not totally hip to, but it seems inevitable that we will get a third film to hopefully end this saga. By all means, if you liked the first film, then you will enjoy this one.
