Weekend Movie Review

Once again, the weekend was a really busy one, so I impressed myself being able to fit in any extra form of entertainment. Here’s what squeaked in!

Civil War – As a fan of Alex Garland, I was a little surprised to see this as his next project after the supremely weird and creepy, Men. What I did think was so brilliant about this after just seeing the trailer was that he was going to get a big audience for this project. In this story, a distant future America is involved in another Civil War, but this time it’s the West verses the East. The president thinks the East is coming out on top, but we learn fairly quickly through a rag-tag group of journalists, that a Western victory is eminent. They make it their goal to get to the president for an exclusive interview before he is likely executed. The journey from New York to DC is a disheartening and disturbing one, and I sincerely hope I am not alive when another actual war breaks out in this country. Definitely thought-provoking.

Get Duked! – Look, at my company’s last movie club I told them I had been playing it pretty safe on the selections, so this time around I gave them four weird ones to choose between. Admittedly, I was the deciding vote, and I just think this movie would be the least offensive while offering maximum entertainment. This is probably my sixth or seventh time seeing this movie and it just never gets old! The music is top-notch, and the story is just hilariously absurd. Four guys are attempting to complete the Duke of Edinburgh Award, but instead end up being hunted by the Duke and Duchess themselves! These kids’ bond is goofy and tighter than you’re lead to initially believe, and I just love that we got some extra goodies in a Get Duked! themed music video for Run the Jewels. Supreme entertainment!
