I made time for a lot of the scarier stuff this weekend, but there were a couple others that I knew I wanted to make time for.
My Policeman – Yes, I can technically watch this with Prime in a couple of weeks, but having read the novel earlier in the year, I was eager to see this adaptation. Evidently, so were a lot of other Harry Styles fans. But you know what, good for them. For whatever reason, this movie didn’t seem to land with critics, but from what I recall from the book, they did a pretty solid job adapting it to the screen. We meet Marion, Tom, and Patrick in their old age, with Patrick having just suffered a stroke. While at first it appears that Marion is just taking care of a good friend, it’s soon apparent that she might be doing so out of spite or retaliation. Especially as we see flashbacks through her eyes, as well as Tom’s real love life with Patrick back in their early 20s. Let me tell you what, some scenes were pretty hot, but overall, it’s still just a sad story about people who couldn’t be themselves back in the 50s.
Black Adam – I had some hesitance going into DC’s latest, but my fears were quashed pretty quickly. We meet a group of researchers who have found the location of a crown that could cause their city to fall, so they intend to hide it again. Turns out the bad guys have been following along, so Adrianna calls out “Shazam” to awaken Black Adam. Only thing is, he’s got some evil in him, too, so killing people is no big deal. That’s kind of a big deal though if you’re being considered a “superhero.” This guy’s got a very complex past and his powers are almost unmatchable (stay for a fun mid-credits cameo), and it really seems like he’s trying to be the good guy. That’s apparently enough for the team Amanda Waller sent out to subdue him. It was neat seeing how all of these characters fit together, and I’ll be interested in seeing more in future DC installments.
