Admittedly, this weekend I watched two rather lame movies, so I decided to re-watch two others to make up for my poor decisions. Netflix and Hulu certainly let me down this weekend, so hopefully they can redeem themselves in the near future.
I watched Netflix’s newest release, the rom-dram-com, The Half of It. The movie went like this. Nerdy girl, Ellie, helps inarticulate footballer, Paul, try to win over his hot-girl crush, Aster. Only problem is, Ellie’s got a crush on Aster, too, so those letters and texts that she’s sending for Paul are a lot more personal than she’s letting on. This movie was fine, but a lot of plot lines got dropped altogether or just thrown in at the last minute. No one ends up with the hot girl, so I’m going to call this a cute movie about a new friendship. I’d say skip this and watch To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before.
To make Saturday night a double-feature, I kept it light and chose to re-watch Mindy Kaling and Emma Thompson (among countless others) in Late Night. I’m sure just like the first time I reviewed this movie, I really enjoyed it! There was a decent amount of extremely funny dialogue, and I liked seeing Mindy’s character slowly build a rapport with her somewhat sexist co-workers. What I still didn’t like about the movie was Emma Thompson’s character. She was just such a dreadful person! I would like to hope that the actual late night hosts out there aren’t a awful as she was. I will say, this time around it was a little more obvious to me that they were poking fun at Fallon and Ellen over everyone else. Interesting.
Last night I decided to watch a movie, whose cover on Hulu has been catching my eye for quite some time. I finally hit the “play” button on Henry Gamble’s Birthday Party. Good lord was this movie terrible! It centers on the seventeenth birthday party for, well, Henry Gamble. Except…who has birthday parties with friends and family combined at seventeen? Literally no one I know. But I suppose that decision was a little more obvious when you realized about 90 percent of the attendees were Bible-thumpers. A shove it down your throat kind, too. I mean, I’m Catholic and I’ve never met another Catholic who as crazy about Jesus as this group of Christians. It was A LOT. And then you slowly find out that they’re not all they’re cracked up to be. Maybe there was a good story under there, but the dialogue and just general acting was so bad that I missed it apparently. Hard pass.
To make up for that atrocity, I decided to watch for at least the third time this year, 4th Man Out. I just can say enough how funny I thought this movie was! Just four guys all trying to adapt to that fact that one of them just came out of the closet. Sure, there were some obstacles, but in general, Adam’s got a crazy awesome support group around him. This movie has made me happy every time I’ve watched it, so you should, too!
