Only Murders in the Building – Season 3 Review

After many months I finally got around to watching the third season of Only Murders in the Building. I think the same thing can be said for me for all of the seasons: I kind of dread watching it, but end up enjoying the finished product.

Will this go down as one of my favorite shows of all time? No. It’s not even in a top ten for the year, but that doesn’t negate the fact that this is actually a good show. While it is a charming comedy, they bring in what people have been loving for the past several years – murder! It’s just fun to try and guess who did it. I think Knives Out proved that rather well. Why not top that genre off with two comedy legends and a pop princess? They really did know how to make a winning combination. Of course, the supporting cast in all of these seasons is just as important, and they seem to hit the nail on the head there, too.

I even say that knowing Meryl Streep was going to have a meaty role this season. And likely next season, too. Oh well, I can endure. This season though started off with Oliver’s leading man seemingly dropping dead on center stage the opening night of his new play! Everything is not as it seems though, and I think three seasons is enough to prove that. Never underestimate anyone. And really, a majority of this season I felt that anyone really could have been the culprit. Heck, they even made Charles look sus! Mabel is perhaps the only “clean” one of the bunch this season, though her judgement felt a little clouded by a crush. Oliver, too. But what is love if it doesn’t make things a little messy sometimes?

Anyway, Ben is dead and he’s not quite the idol everyone’s made him out to be. Though everyone else in the cast has secrets, too. It all hinges on who was missing the rattle hanky that Ben had gifted everyone. Easier said than done. Our trio of amateur sleuths knock through just about everyone before the pieces finally start clicking into place. That also doesn’t happen without a little break-up of sorts. They all feel like they’ve got actual lives now, with something to lose if things don’t work out, but curiosity and justice get the better of them in the end and they join forces in the nick of time. I will argue that the reveal was made obvious to me a couple of episodes before the season finale, so it lacked a little bit of excitement that way, but I look forward to where this story goes next. And what other big stars will be attached!
