Review – Vice Versa + Bonus Episodes

Let me tell you what, I was not expecting to be impressed with any other BLs this year, but I stand corrected! Well, it’s actually two BLs! I started a new one called Last Twilight without realizing they were only half way through airing episodes, but I was so taken with the leads played by actors named Jimmy and Sea, that I sought out what else they’ve done together. And that led me to Vice Versa.

This BL has been on my list for most of the year, as it’s one of the top ones listed almost anywhere I looked, but the premise kind of staved me off of it. It wasn’t until I saw Jimmy and Sea’s incredible chemistry in Last Twilight that I decided to give it a shot. In the show, we meet Talay, a hard-working young man whose just landed his dream job as a colorist. Jimmy plays Puen, an actor who doesn’t seem to ever have a minute to himself (I see that meta storyline!). The two meet briefly in a bathroom, but nothing else can come of it as Talay seemingly dies by accidental drowning after a night of drinking. The only thing is, he wakes up in the body of someone totally different and apparently in a totally different universe!

He gets all of this news dropped on him by Phuwadol, another person from Talay’s universe. She introduces him to a whole group of people stuck in the exact same predicament. All of them are trying to get back to their universe, but it may never happen if they never meet their portkey. Shortly after, a man who only refers to himself as Tun lands in this universe. He and Talay bond quickly, though neither think they are each other’s portkey. This universe is so trying to tell them otherwise! They end up getting stuck in this alternate universe for two years, so in the meantime, they foster the relationships with their bodies’ friends and make a couple of movies together!

After spending so much time together, it’d be kind of hard for these two not to fall for each other, and it turns out they are each other’s portkey. Though getting back isn’t as simple as it seemed it was going to be. Nor was striking their relationship back up in the real world. Obviously Tun was Puen, so his career makes living a like with Talay really hard. You know what else was cool in the alternate universe? Recognizing same sex marriage – how cool of them! The real world Thailand could learn a thing or two. These two make it work though, and the bonus Our Skyy 2 episodes just really compounds on the strength of their love for each other.

I appreciate that this series didn’t get too science fiction on me. The alternate universe was just generally brighter, though each episode had a specific color overlay, kind of tying in Talay’s colorist job. I also couldn’t get over how many other GMMTV actors made appearances in this series. Even the really brief parts were fun and I got excited in recognizing so many of them! Jimmy and Sea are so, so good together and I can’t wait to watch the rest of Last Twilight. I only hope we get more series soon after!
