SAG Awards Recap

We’re in the home stretch people! The SAG Awards are the last major awards ceremony before the Oscars, so it’s just one more indicator of what’s to come. This particular show is about actors recognizing actors, so it’s a nice watch and a very organized and classy event.

With that being said, only acting categories and best picture/shows are the winners here, so any directors you saw in the audience were there purely as spectators (Bong Joon Ho looked like a proud dad recording all night). The awards are also presented in a way that makes sense! Comedy shows, drama shows, best supporting, and so on. I also laugh at how it’s such a big deal for other awards shows to have no host, when this ceremony has never had one (for as long as I’ve been watching anyways).

Surprise winners of the night were The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel beating out Fleabag for comedy show! Even Alex Borstein said she voted for them! Other surprises in the night for television were the wins for Jennifer Aniston and Peter Dinklage. While Game of Thrones have swept up so many awards over its run, I just assumed that the disaster of that final season ruined any shot they had. And I loved Jennifer’s genuine surprise at winning her Actor. In seeing all the nominees, I was surprised at the lack of Succession in any category, and I feel for Schitt’s Creek. Here’s hoping they get some love next year for their final season!

In terms of the film categories, I think at this point it’s a sure thing for the major acting categories: Laura Dern and Brad Pitt for supporting, and Renee Zellweger and Joaquin Phoenix for lead. I did thoroughly enjoy Brad Pitt and Joaquin Phoenix’s speeches. Brad opened by joking he was going to add this award to his Tinder profile, while Phoenix took time to recognize each of his fellow nominees. With all of those sure-things for the acting categories, I still feel like my head is spinning in what now seems to be a three way race for best picture. Last night, Parasite took home the Best Ensemble in a Motion Picture, but other awards shows have been divided by awarding Once Upon a Time…In Hollywood and 1917. I just don’t know!

The Oscars are just three short weeks away and I’m becoming increasingly more excited! Stay tuned!
