Shadowhunters, “City of Glass” Review

The penultimate episode of Shadowhunters, “City of Glass,” aired last night and it was action-packed, and a beautiful set-up for the two and a half hour series finale next week!

The episode sees Clary being ruthless with the Sealie Queen, making Jonathan thrilled that she’s by his side; even after Clary rejects his creepy, incestuous advances. It also sees Jace, Isabelle, Simon, Luke, and Alec make a plan with Meliorn to return their Queen while also sneaking in to stab Jonathan or Clary with Glorious (made of Heavenly Fire). We also get to see Asmodeous try to consul (not really) Magnus’ heartbreak, and Jordan reveals to Maia that he stole some of the Heavenly Fire for her to become human again.

Maryse is the captain of the Malec ship, because she goes to Magnus after learning that Alec broke up with him. She clued Magnus in enough to know that his father was behind it (along with turning Lorenzo into a reptile!). As retaliation, Magnus sends his father through a portal unconscious so he will be in limbo forever. Aside from letting Maia in on his thievery, Jordan also tells her that he’s dying from silver poisoning. Their scenes through the remainder of the episode were especially emotional, but Maia is also a badass and pushes her sadness aside to be the Alpha of her pack at the end.

The fight between Jonathan, Clary, Jace, Isabelle, and Alec is successful in that they are able to destroy the twinning rune, but being separated means Jonathan now has more powers and the Morgenstern sword! After stabbing Clary with Glorious, it shatters, which means Izzy had to shield Simon – cue Sizzy (sort of)! Elsewhere, Luke is being a little shady with his new position in the Preator Lupus, so we’ll have to see where that goes next week.

After all that action, the gang heads to Alicante to warn the Clave of Jonathan, but they’re a little late to the party – Jonathan’s beat them there and opened a rift to Edom to let demons wreak havoc and destroy everyone in the Glass City. Magnus shows up in the nick of time to save Isabelle and Alec from a hoard of demons coming right at them!

That moment leads us to the much anticipated proposal scene! Everyone has been waiting on baited breath for Malec’s reunion and it did not disappoint, as they both proposed to each other! That happiness was short lived when Magnus declared that he could close the rift by amplifying his powers…in Edom. It was shattering to watch Alec’s tearful face when Mangus left.

With all that, the extra-long finale’s trailer and teasers look very promising! Hopefully the defeat of Jonathan and a proper Malec wedding! Get ready for a winner, Angels!
