The film festival magic continues, but this time with an entirely new one! Similar excellent options, although sadly some were relegated strictly to drive-in theaters. Obviously, since I do not live there I cannot attend. Sad. No worry though, because I did get to catch a film I’d had my eye one since the start of the year!

AFI Film Festival
Not much good has come out of this pandemic, so imagine my surprise when something actually awesome happens?! Film Festivals all over the world have either had to cancel or postpone, but now a large handful have caught onto the streaming bug, and this works out magically for me! Usually attended by locals or strictly critics, this change of events has given me an unseen advantage. I, just a lowly film fan, gets to watch potential Oscars films ahead of the masses!

Ah, after last week’s unusual mediocrity, I have got my film viewings back up to snuff. On the lower end, but considering I did stuff with some people (say what??), the fact that I managed to squeeze these all in is quite the feat.

I keep chugging along through shows with my new Apple+ subscription, and next on my list was a show I was really excited about when I first saw an advertisement for it, Defending Jacob. Sure, it’s got everyone’s favorite Captain America, Chris Evans, and Downton Abbey‘s Michelle Dockery, but the premise just sounded so intriguing that I was going to watch it regardless of its leads.

Somehow I’ve managed to squeeze in more movies than should be possible, especially given that the Emmys are on tonight, but here we are! Some are great and some are just meh, but no regrets with my choices this weekend. Here’s my brief take on all of them.

Towards the start of quarantine, I went out of my way to hunt down Donald Ray Pollock’s gothic hillbilly novel, The Devil All the Time, only after learning that it was being adapted into a feature film for Netflix. I also saw the cast list, which locked in my need to read this novel ASAP. And I did! If you follow my blog at all, you probably read (or at least glanced) at my review for the novel. I really enjoyed it! Not only did it take place in my home state, but it also was graphic and violent. There was such an intricate and desolate web woven between all of these characters that really sucked me in.

Alright, I have finally caved and subscribed to Apple+ in order to watch the last series I wanted to get to before the Emmys air this Sunday, The Morning Show. Look, when this show first got announced, I dug into my hipster way and refused to watch because of some of the cast. Yes, I am a big fan of Billy Crudup and Mark Duplass, but Jennifer Aniston and Resse Witherspoon are just slightly overrated in my opinion and that was enough to turn me off initially. That coupled with all the hype around the show also turned me off. Sometimes excitement about a show gets me excited about it, but sometimes it has the opposite effect on me. Go figure. Regardless of how I felt then, though, I really, really enjoyed The Morning Show and I’m glad I finally gave it a viewing!
Read moreBook Review: Our Chemical Hearts by Krystal Sutherland
A couple days ago I finished reading the debut young adult novel Our Chemical Hearts written by Krystal Sutherland. Having watched the film adaptation a few weeks ago and being rather disappointed with how cringe-worthy it was, you’d think I’d be nervous about reading the source material, but I wasn’t! In fact, more than half way through the film both my friend and I agreed that this book was probably infinitely better, and it was!

I don’t know that anything I watched this weekend I planned on watching, but I have zero regrets about any of them. All were practically spur of the moment, with a few that I’d never even really heard of before. They also covered a wide array of genres which always makes for an entertaining time. I would say if you picked any of these films to watch in the future you won’t be let down. I promise!

This is going to sound tired, I’m sure (especially since it’s been out for almost a year), but Unbelievable was unbelievable! Unbelievably good that it! Yes, you can take that corny admission for what it’s worth, but I’m not joking. Following the true story of two cops who try to take down a Washington State and Colorado serial rapist, this story was gripping! At this point I feel that the show has been on Netflix long enough that if you haven’t watched it yet you might not ever (excluding me, of course), so prepare yourself for spoilers!
