Upload Season 2 Review

Wow. Almost two full years have passed since the first season of Upload made its way to Amazon Prime. Well, the wait is finally over, and we’ve got a new season (albeit a slightly shorter one).

The beginning of this season starts with a much needed recap of events, then picks up almost right where we’ve left off. Nathan is saved from 2gig hell, but it’s because his ex-girlfriend, Ingrid, has decided to upload for him. She is a straight-up stalker, people! Meanwhile, Nora has decided to go with her dad to some remote and tech-free “Ludd” community so people won’t keep trying to kill her for learning about Nathan’s murder. Nathan kind of begrudgingly goes along with everything Ingrid wants because she killed herself for him. In reality, we learn pretty quickly that Ingrid is in fact alive, but is existing in Lakeview with a hug suit. The scenes of her briefly outside of the suit are pretty hilarious.

Alternatively, it doesn’t take long for Nora to become comfortable in her new surroundings, and is even moving on with one of the leaders of the Ludd movement, Matteo. You see, this frustrating thing happened where Nora told Nathan she loved him right before he froze in 2G, so he never got to say it back, and by the time he unfroze, Nora was unreachable. Frustrated! The only reason the two are even able to really reconnect is because Nora is tasked with being hired back at Horizon to cause some mayhem. Although Nora wants to be part of the movement, she also knows that, like Nathan, there are some actual good people uploaded at Lakeview. She soon ditches them and re-teams with Nathan to get to the bottom of who killed him.

While Nora and Nathan are doing their own thing, Ingrid is preoccupied with becoming a mother to a virtual baby. Everyone at Horizon finds this comical because she’s kind of the worst, but also, everyone is aware of the fact that she wants this baby and Nathan’s love because she is lonely. In a final meeting about the baby, Nathan tells Ingrid he can’t do it, and when she reveals she’s not actually dead Nathan declares he “owes her nothing.” This declaration is also the motivation Nathan needs to be with Nora, but ultimately do the right thing. Apparently, a very rich client at Lakeview was working with Ingrid’s father. Together, using Freeyond, they are essentially going to disenfranchise the poor.

In order to stop it all, Nathan learns from Ingrid that she re-grew his head on his body, so he’s going to download into it. Only problem with that plan is that he could explode within 24 hours after the download. It’s a risk he’s willing to take though, so he does it pretty seamlessly. He and Nora can finally be together, but of course the series ends with a cliffhanger and a nose bleed, making us believe the successful download might end quicker than expected. Before that cliffhanger though, we learn that a new Nathan is being made in both Lakeview and reality. That could lead to some seriously fun developments in the newly announced third season! Check in next year (hopefully) for a review!
