Weekend Movie Review

I know another weekend is coming around literally tomorrow, but why clog up your feed next week with too much stuff? Here’s what I ended up seeing last weekend.

The Invite – This movie got so much praise at Sundance this year that I was really bummed it wasn’t a virtual offering. But, finally in theaters, my sister and I jumped at the chance to check it out with one of our friends. This movie was hysterical. Ultimately a chamber piece, miserable Joe, a music teacher, gets back to his apartment only to be told by his wife that their upstairs neighbors are coming over for dinner in 15 minutes. She has been frantically spiffying up their apartment all day, as well as arranging a bougie charcuterie and making a souffle. Joe’s biggest gripe with his neighbors is that he’s been unable to sleep recently because of how loudly they’ve been having sex in the middle of the night. When Hawk and Pina finally arrive, awkwardness ensues, as well as some shockingly hysterical revelations. I absolutely do not want to spoil the fun of this movie. Definitely go see it if you can.

Voicemails to Isabelle – I have held off on this movie for the past few weeks because even though I thought it was going to be good, I also very well knew it was going to be sad as shit. And I was right on both counts. Jill’s sister, Isabelle, dies kind of suddenly from complications related to Cycstic Fibrosis (yay representation!), so in the months to come, she still sends voicemails to her sister’s number about things they’d talk about normally. I do kind of love this, and I’m not even mad that her number is now Wes’ work number. He listens to these voicemails and finds that he’s falling in love with this stranger. Of course, what could go wrong when he finally inserts himself into her life? It’s the in-between stuff that really rounds out this movie, and the cast is stellar, as well as the storytelling. For a Netflix film, this one is definitely worth making time for.

Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass – I feel like a fool that I didn’t know David Wain and Ken Marino were the brains behind this film. If you’re even marginally a fan of Wet Hot American Summer, then you will love this. I sure did! The lines, delivery, and overall style was so similar to that film and it’s subsequent spin-off series (RIP), that I had myself really wondering who made this film. I could have slapped myself when their names popped up at the end, partly because they were both actually in the film, along with Jon Hamm who was involved in the show more than ten years ago now. Anyway, the story is this: Gail is set to be married in a few weeks when she learns that her fiance actually slept with his celebrity hall pass. So she teams up with her best friend, and some strange new friends, to sleep with her own celebrity hall pass while she’s in LA for a hair styling convention. There’s a side of evil spy stuff, but it all amounts to a big pile of ridiculous hysterics. I seriously loved this so much – what a good pair with The Invite this weekend, and as far as I’m concerned, Zoey Deutch is 2 for 2, as well.
