Weekend Movie Review

No theater movies this weekend (gearing up for all the time I’m about to spend there for Avengers: Endgame), so I vegetated in a recliner and streamed some movies instead!

First off the bat was a throwback to the year 2000 with The Broken Hearts Club: A Romantic Comedy. I wouldn’t really call it romantic or that much of a comedy, but it was still an entertaining watch. The film focused on a group of gay friends and how they maneuvered through life, love, and friendship…and some baseball (doesn’t that make the beginning of this paragraph fun?). It mastered the art of not making anything too big of a statement, and most of what they discussed really any group of friends could. I’m sure this movie probably had some cliches I’m too ignorant to mention, but I really enjoyed Timothy Olyphant as the lead in this plucky film, and its fun energy.

Off the heels of that film, I chose the newer Netflix release starring two Marvel actors: Unicorn Store. Man was this movie weird! But the dialogue kept it fun, along with its sheer childlike innocence from star and director Brie Larson. Plus the rest of the cast was pretty great. I don’t want to spoil this, although I think the film title sort of gives it away, but one of the greatest exchanges involved graph paper and I loved every minute of it!

Saturday, I chose two new releases, the first being Destroyer. Man oh man, I didn’t know it was possible to make Nicole Kidman rough, but magically they did it. Unfortunately, that was all I was really able to focus on. Kidman plays Erin, a former undercover FBI agent whose past comes back to haunt her in present day. She is clearly still effected by her time in the gang. It was all fine, a little slow, a little bloody, and a lot of brooding. I personally would have liked more Sebastian Stan scenes, but I’ll take what I can get.

Finally, I watched Netflix’s newest romantic comedy starring Gina Rodriguez, called Someone Great. Only, this romantic comedy isn’t all that romantic. The film starts with Gina’s character, Jenny, breaking up with her longtime boyfriend (Lakeith Stanfield) for a job with Rolling Stone magazine. He basically didn’t want to move because he liked New York too much…uh, he didn’t even have a good job! Sounds to me like she’s better off. Either way, that episode is the beginning of a binge drinking filled day along with plenty of parties and hookups and fond memories of what was. It was cute, and there were some decent laughs, so go ahead and give it a watch.
