Weekend Movies

I know you think that I probably wouldn’t have much to watch this weekend given how many films I watched over the course of last week, but you’d be mistaken. With that being said, some are repeats and none are brand-spanking new, but that’s okay! I’ve got plenty more film festival content coming your way this week, so I’ll keep it brief to spare you. There are also a handful of season-appropriate films I watched, so check those out!

The Rental – What better way to prepare for Halloween than to re-watch this horror film about an Air BnB gone bad? I know I’ve reviewed this before, so I’ll just reiterate that it is worth your time and will provide you with some chills for the season.

When a Stranger Calls – My sister has been harping on me to watch this ever since she saw it the first time in 2006…well, nothing like waiting 14 years to finally break down and watch it. Yes, it was very suspenseful, but more distracting was the horrendous fashion from that time. Also, the catalyst that got her into this life or death situation? Going over her minutes! The good old days. But in all seriousness, this movie was quite thrilling and you’ll catch yourself yelling at the screen for her to not pick up the damn phone! Go for it if you’ve got Hulu.

Happy Death Day – I love this horror film! While it is scary and a little gruesome, it also perfectly blends some humor in there! As you can probably assume from the title, it’s like Groundhog’s Day, but with dying. Scream queen Tree only has so many chances to figure out why she keeps reliving her death before time runs out. Obviously, watch this.

Game Over, Man! – Since I’m about two and a half seasons into Workaholics now, I appreciate this film so much more. Is it a rather stupid action/comedy? Yes, but just like Workaholics, it promotes the power of friendship and these dudes just have such great chemistry together. Might not be your cup of tea, so watch at your own risk.

5 Years Apart – I was a big fan of Greek and I’m a current fan of Roswell, New Mexico, so it seemed like a no-brainer to watch this movie which combined two of the stars. It focuses on the extremely strained relationship between two brothers who were born, you guessed it, exactly five years apart. They mistakenly both congregate at their parents’ house while their out of town for their birthday weekend. There’s a lot of booze, golf, and a quite rude Australian. Nothing to ride home about, but still enjoyable.

Bad Match – This is what happens when Tinder goes wrong. Like really wrong. It had a bit of a Lifetime movie quality to it, but honestly it was still better than anything that channel produces. Boy meets girl, boy ditches girl, girl is obsessed with boy, and then some things go way too far. The twist at the end I have a hard time you’ll see coming. Kudos!

Looks That Kill – This was a strange little rom-com that pits a girl with a enlarged heart condition hits things off with a boy whose face is “fatally attractive.” I laughed very hard when that line was delivered. Lots of potential here, but it never really quite went there. Then the ending took a strange turn that while it makes sense, it also didn’t really seem to fit the genre this movie was going for. I say skip it.

Made in Italy – As much as I like Liam Neeson, this drama was rough. Rather slow despite its short run time, this movie focuses on the fractured relationship between a father and son, and the relationship they have between their deceased wife/mother. I suppose this was maybe a cathartic project for Neeson and his son to work on considering how closely it parallels to the loss of Natasha Richardson in their real life. Regardless of the personal connection, it definitely could have been executed better.
